Rivalries Help Leagues Succeed WPBL Has One Brewing
Women’s Pro Baseball is playing its inaugural postseason having one team, the San Francisco Firebells, reaching the WPBL Championship, and what could be a new sports rivalry is heating up in the other playoff series.
The teams in question are the Los Angeles Queens and New York Heights. What better for a new league than a good rivalry? What better way to get that started than in the country’s two most populated cities?
Thursday night’s game one between LA and NY in Semifinal Round B saw the LA Queens win in dominating fashion, 10–3. The NY Heights took game two Saturday eve, 9- 7. Game 3 is set for Monday 7 p.m. Eastern.
Standout players include the Heights outfielder Natsuki Yonetani. She has collected five hits in six at-bats, and Queens infielder Isabella Villarreal also has five hits but in one less at-bat than Yonetani.
The San Francisco Firebells won the Semifinal Round A by taking game one 6–4 and game two 9–6 against the Boston Hunters.
The win-or-go-home game three between LA and NY will be on ESPN+ in the USA and YouTube internationally.
The WPBL Championship begins Wednesday, Sept. 16, 7 p.m. Eastern. Like the regular season, all postseason games are being contested at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinoi
