Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry posted to Facebook about President Donald Trump’s racist Truth Social post depicting the Obamas as apes.

Mr. Henry asked, “If you want ant (sic) him to stop the base must show that he is wrong.”

Given that "base" typically means party affiliation, I interpreted his comment as a reference to President Trump's Republican base.

However, Mr. Henry replied to my blog post by tagging me and writing, "I never said the word 'Republican.' I said the base. I

meant the person without regard of

Party."

With this in mind, at 7:24 p.m. I rewrote this blog thusly.

Yes, it is about the person, without regard to party. Why is that? Mr. Trump's win over the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, was not do to the Republican Party base, but of the people Mr. Trump skillfully brought together to form a coalition.

The unusual coalition of non-Republican voters Mr. Trump put together consisted of the following.

African Americans. Pew Research reported that Mr. Trump received 15% of the African American vote in 2024, which nearly doubles the 8% he received in 2020. I’ve seen reporting that the boost to 15% comes from a larger number of African American men voting for him.

Hispanics gravitated towards Mr. Trump. Pew Research stated, “In 2020, Joe Biden won Hispanic voters by 25 percentage points…But Trump drew nearly even with Kamala Harris among Hispanic voters, losing among them by only 3 points.” A jump of 22% in any cohort of voters is significant.

Trump gained with independent voters; what was a 9% edge in 2020 for Biden over Trump was an even 48% each for Kamala Harris and Trump in 2024.

Libertarians left their nominee, Chase Oliver, for Trump in part because of Trump's promise to free Ross Ulbricht, which he did.

Socialists voted for Trump. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, asked her voters why they voted for her and for Trump. The surprising answers, as delineated in a Business Insider piece are:

  • "It's real simple… trump and you care for the working class."

  • "Trump is going to get us the money and let's men have a voice. You're brilliant and have amazing passion!"

  • "I feel like Trump and you are both real."

  • "I know ppl that did this and it was bc of Gaza."

  • "You are focused on the real issues people care about. Similar to Trump populism in some ways."

  • "Because of Gaza."

  • "I voted Trump and dems because he reached out to Muslims."

As the above illustrates, it was his coalition of African Americans, Hispanics, Independents, Libertarians, and Socialists who have to say, "no more" to Mr. Trump. If they turn on him, then he loses political capital for the remaining term of his presidency.

In that scenario, another loser would be anyone who wants to run on his platform. One such possibility being Vice President JD Vance.
