Reds Call Up Three Ex- Daytona Tortugas

It’s been a truly amazing two days at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati as three former Daytona Tortugas got the call to the show. 24-year-old infielder-outfielder Tyler Callihan and 22-year-old starting pitcher Chase Petty were on hand to play in the April 30 doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. The doubleheader was due to a postponement of Tuesday’s game on account of bad weather.
Mr. Callihan started in game one, got into game two and had family fly up from Jacksonville, Florida, to watch.

“It’s everything we ever dreamed of, Mr. Callihan’s mom, Lendy, said during an in-game interview on FanDuel Sports Network Ohio. ‘I mean, since he was three years old, It’s amazing, I’m so happy and proud of him. I’m glad his dreams come true.” Mom was sitting with Dad John, and Mr. Callihan’s wife, Catherine.
Catherine is days away from having a baby. She described Mr. Callihan as “giddy” after he got called to MLB. She was at a mall with her mom, dropped everything packed and got to Cincinnati in time for the game.
Mr. Callihan was hitting .303 with a .938 OPS at AAA for the Louisville Bats. In the doubleheader, he was hitless in three at-bats while playing left field and second base.

The St. Louis Cardinals swept the doubleheader, winning the first game 6-0 and the second 9-1. Unfortunately for Mr. Petty, he took the beating in game two.
He started the game but wasn’t around long enough to see the end of the third inning. Being pulled after two and a third innings, granted some sloppy defense was a culprit as well as his 11 baserunners that led to all nine runs being earned. The New Jersey native who committed to play at the University of Florida but a first-round selection by the Minnesota Twins changed his mind, and off he went to pro ball. Mr. Petty wasn’t exactly lighting it up with the Louisville Bats sporting a 3.53 ERA and a 1.304 WHIP.
That’s not all for former Daytona Tortugas as Luis Mey was called up today as well. Down to AAA goes pitcher Alexis Díaz.
Mr. Mey pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Cincinnati's 9-1 win today over the Cardinals. He is 23 years old, from San Pedro de Macoris, and has pitched a mere nine innings for the Bats, all in relief, garnering a 4.00 ERA and 1.556 WHIP.
Though nine innings is a small sample size, his 172.1 total minor league innings have produced a 5.48 ERA and a 1.805 WHIP. Me thinks his call-up is likely a depth move, and he will be back in the minors once the Reds have a well-rested replacement.
