Are the six democrats who thought it best to tell U.S. Armed Forces and the intelligence community that they don't have to obey an unlawful order grandstanding?
I ask because part of my training in the U.S. Army, and I'm sure the intel community as well, was to disobey an unlawful order. It doesn't have to be said to them again.
I would be insulted if I were still serving.
There is an implicit message that the people to whom they are directing this message at are not smart enough to know that they don't have to obey an unlawful order.
Let's review why this seems to be political theater:
Under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the U.S. Manual for Courts-Martial, service members must obey lawful orders and disobey unlawful orders. Four in five U.S. troops surveyed understand the duty to disobey illegal orders. Military Times. Pub Date: Aug. 14, 2025.
All members of the military have the right, and in some cases have the duty, to refuse illegal orders. Your oath is to the Constitution (which incorporates international treaties ratified by the U.S. on human rights and the law of war), not to the Commander-In-Chief or to any other individual in the chain of command. Source: Military Law Task Force of the National Lawyers Guild. Pub Date: Nov. 11, 2025
See, it is already out there in the public domain.
When I was in basic training, as a private first class in the Army, we were told that if given an illegal order and you are alone, get somebody to stand by your side and have the person in charge say it again. Then go above that person's pay grade.
In no way, shape, or form was it even implied that unlawful orders should be obeyed.
What makes this so surprising is that the the six democrats in this video served in the military or the intelligence community and still thought they had to speak on this. And that smacks of something else, maybe grandstanding, possibly some other angle that will soon be coming out.
